Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker. Worked in Edo. Trained first to the family craft or dyer, then, probably, a pupil of Katsukawa Shun`en. Then was accepted by Utagawa Toyokuni and used go of Chōōrō, Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi. Studied Tosa, Kano and Maruyama painting, influenced by Utagawa Kuninao. Then founded his own style. Famous for his prints of actors and animals, also specialized in illustrations of heroic episodes in Japanese history. Occasionaly, influenced by European models.
