Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker. Born in Katsushika in Musashi; lived in Edo. At 15 pupil of Toyokuni; took name of Kunisada. In 1807 prodused first book illustrations; in 1808 began to make actor prints. After his father`s death inherited the liecence of the ferry at Itsutsume and took name Gototei (Fith Ferry House). In 1833 studie under Hanabusa ikkei; then the style of hanabusa Itcho, taking name of Kochoro. in 1844 took name of Toyokuni III, by which he is frequently know. In 1845 retired, calling himself Shozo. Specialized in illustrations for story books and portraits of actors. His few landscape prints quite fine; his bijinga generally undistinguished.
