Ukiyo-e painter, printmaker, illustrator. Born in Edo of a samurai family from Kyushu. Pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, who in 1820 gave him his own go Taito; from that date signed his work Katsushika Taito or Genryusai Taito. Collaborated with Hokusai on the second volume of the Manga, which appeared in 1815 (at which time he was known as Toenro Hokusen). Lived and worked in Edo from 1830 to 1843 and Osaka from 1843 to 1853. Prolific book illustrator. At one point, forged Hokusai’s signature on some of his own designs; was found out and called Inu Hokusai (Dog Hokusai). Also known as Osaka Hokusai. Not much of an artist, though his painting is an able imitation of that of his master.
