SHUMBAISAI Hokuei / 春梅斉北英

Ukiyo-e printmaker. Worked in Osaka. Pupil of Shunko Hokushu; with other pupils of Hokushu, settled in Osaka and played a prominent part in a group of a group of designers of theatrical color prints. Together with pupils of Kunisada, known as the Osaka group. After 1829, used go Hokuei,usually signing Shunkosai Hokuei; also used a seal reading "Fumoto no Yuki" (Snow at the Foot of the Mountain), a reference to his teacher, who used a seal reading "Mount Yoshino". Good at actor prints and also as an illustrator of storybooks.
